What to Like: Steve McNair Jr is one of the more physical receivers
in the State of Mississippi. He is what you term a "clutch" receiver,
as the Warriors look his way often when the chips are down and they need a big
play. Steve has had a very difficult year as his father, Steve McNair, was murdered
before the start of his senior season. But that has not stopped Steve from making
big play after big play for Oak Grove's offense this season as he caught the winning
pass for a TD in the third game of the year on 3rd and 17 with 9 seconds left
to play. McNair has hauled in 39 passes for 372 yards for the season. He also
lines up at tailback and quarterback often and has rushed for another 200 plus
yards. USM can expect a very physical receiver who possesses great hands.
What may concern you: The biggest concern from the college
recruiters is his lack of wiggle and quickness. He is 6' 0", 190 and built
very sturdy but he lacks that extra gear. Will Steve line up in the slot or
wide out on the next level? These are all questions that the Southern Miss head
coach will have to answer next year. Regardless, Steve is a winner and will
have ample time to work on his speed once he arrives on the D1 level.
Bottom Line: McNair had some BCS offers and Southern
Miss did an excellent job of getting his commitment before he took other visits.
Alabama was in talks with him, and he was also offered by Nebraska, Minnesota,
Tulsa, MSU, and he actually took in an official visit to West Virginia earlier
in the fall.
